The 24721 Timken is a precision-engineered cup designed for single-row tapered roller bearings. Serving as the outer ring, it is intended to be paired with a separately available cone assembly (cage with rolling elements) to form a complete bearing unit. Both the inner and outer rings feature conical raceways, complemented by conical rollers, enabling the bearing to accommodate both radial and axial loads in one direction. Increased angles between the outer ring and the bearing centre line correspond to higher axial load capacities.

The geometric configuration of tapered roller bearings minimizes sliding between raceways and rollers, reducing component wear. Proper operation requires a minimum load. As the cone and cup are separable, installation is straightforward, and axial clearance (end play) or preload can be adjusted during assembly.

For optimal bearing performance and reliability, it is recommended to replace both the cone and cup simultaneously, preferably with components from the same manufacturer. This practice ensures compatibility and prevents issues related to material differences, internal bearing profiles, or tolerance variations.
