The 52209 SKF is a double-direction thrust ball bearing, also known as a thrust bearing or axial deep groove ball bearing. This bearing includes a shaft washer, two housing washers, and two ball and cage assemblies. Thrust ball bearings have an open design and use ball elements that support high rotational speeds. Because these bearings are separable, components can be assembled independently.

Double-direction thrust ball bearings are designed to accommodate axial loads in both directions, allowing for axial location of the shaft either way. These bearings are not suitable for radial loads. The shaft washer is fitted onto the shaft and rotates with it, while the housing washers feature a larger bore diameter to permit free movement of the shaft. The housing washers have flat seats, so the 52209 SKF does not provide compensation for misalignment between the shaft and the housing.
